Thirunavalur Bhaktajaneswarar temple is ageless and devotionally revered by millions of Hindus from all over the world. It is here Lord Sukra (Venus) got relieved from all retrograde effects. Lord Sukra (Venus) installed a Shivalinga in the shrine and Sri Bhaktajaneswarar was worshipped by Brahmma,Vishnu, Chandikeswara, Saptha Rishis (Seven sages), Garuda, Sundarar. The Sun is facing the west in this holy land. The diviness is evident to witness that during the month of Panguni (March-April) from 23 to 27, Sun rays fall on the presiding deity.Thirunavalur is highly praised by Sekkizhar in his celebrated epic Periapuranam .The Sanskrit Jambunatheswarar was later mentioned as Thirunavaleesan in Chaste Tamil by Sundarar and he named the place as Thirunavalur .
This nagar is tribute to that great soul born in this land and thus named Nayanmar Sundarar Nagar
